The Charms and Stories of Maasin River, Siargao
Hey there, fellow adventurers! On a recent day off from managing BLISS Restaurant Siargao, I took the opportunity to re-explore one of Siargao’s treasures, the Maasin River. If you’ve ever searched for Maasin River siargao location, you’ll know that this beautiful river is a hotspot for locals and tourists alike. And I’m here to share some insights and tales from my visit.
A Dive into Maasin’s Offerings
What is Maasin River known for? You might ask. Beyond its serene surroundings, Maasin River was home to the most famous bent palm tree in the entire Philippines. This was THE place for adventurous guests who loved rope swing diving. Picture yourself swinging off a palm tree and making a splash into the cool river waters below. Additionally, this river was a haven for canoe riding enthusiasts, allowing one to paddle leisurely and relish the natural beauty around.
Entrance Details and More
One of the frequent queries about the Maasin River is about the entrance fee. To answer the burning question: how much is the Maasin River entrance fee? It’s a mere PHP 20. A small price to pay for a day’s worth of adventure and breathtaking views.
The Tale Behind the Name
So, why is it called Maasin River? During the Spanish era, some Spaniards approached the river and asked the natives in Castillan Spanish, “Que pueblo es este?” The natives, mistakenly thinking they were inquiring about the taste of the water, responded with “Maasin” (meaning salty). Since then, the river has held this name, becoming an essential piece of our island’s history.
A Sad Farewell to an Icon
But, dear readers, nature, as it always does, took its course. On February 22, 2023, Siargao island’s iconic bent palm tree at the Maasin River collapsed. The community and the Barangay Officials had put in countless efforts to preserve this landmark that not only offered scenic beauty but also provided a livelihood to many. As the community aptly put it, #ThisIsNotTheEnd.
Local non-government organization, Lokal Lab, reminded us of the responsibilities we bear. They mentioned that despite warnings not to climb the tree, some visitors didn’t heed the call. This serves as a stark reminder for us to be more conscious and responsible as tourists.
More to Explore
Even with the bent tree’s absence, Maasin River remains one of the 10 best Siargao tourist spots. There are still several spots along the river where you can paddle a canoe, and if you venture a little further, you might even discover a secret pool to cool down and relax in. Pure bliss!
